Portrait Installation at Lancing College

I was thrilled to be able to work with Original Field Architects, Outback Rigging and Genesis Imaging again to create an installation at Lancing College, Sussex, to commemorate their 175th anniversary. The school asked for nominations from their community of alumni, students and staff for people who are making a difference, and I made portraits of the 28 most popular nominees. The portraits really pop out against the backdrop of the painted portraits of former head masters and founders of the college.

It was particularly exciting to visit the newly renovated National Portrait Gallery at the end of the summer because my zoom portrait of Laura was included in the opening exhibitions. The exhibition was of the series of images called Hold Still, collected by the National Portrait Gallery to commemorate the pandemic. It already felt quite moving to look back at this historic time through the 100 images which were chosen and to remember some of the previously unthinkable things that we had to do.

This is one of Greece’s most popular magazines and they wanted pictures which communicated that the organisation is based in Oxford but is working to protect global forests. We were very fortunate to be working on a December day, with bright winter sunshine, which gave the opportunity to use the shadows of the trees in Christ Church Meadow, against the ancient wall of one of the colleges.

It was especially exciting to create new work in real life, in this difficult year. The women at the Gatehouse Charity were brilliant and the exhibition outside in central Oxford felt like a perfect way to celebrate their achievements. The Director of the charity said: “Working with Fran has taught me the beauty of photography and the people that I work with, which I didn’t realise that I needed reminding of in such trying times.
